After 9 months of dreading going back to where my father is buried, I did it yesterday. I can't believe the relief it gave me. Its like peace at last. My dad is buried right next to my grandpa and grandma. I remember as a child visiting the grave site with soap and a bucket. My mother cleaned the stone every Memorial Day. Yesterday my kids cleaned the stone. They were very willing to walk and get the water and of course looking at other markers along the way. One site caught the attention of my middle daughter...this was all relatively new to them. Anyway she asked me to go see it with her when we were finished. So my sister, and the rest of the kids followed. It was a fresh grave, all the flowers from the service was still there. The spray was laying there, she read what the ribbons said, "Mom, Wife, Grandmother" As innocent as this child can be, she asked, "How do all three fit in there." My sister and I just stopped, looked at each other, looked at her, quietly chuckled and explained without making her feel like it was a ridiculous question. This girl was curious and the respect she had for each grave she encountered was incredible. It was a great day.
